Panaji: Even as state govt has been preparing to cover all classes for NEP implementation in Goa by 2027-28, a large number of schools in the state, particularly govt-run ones, appear far from ready for the shift, as per govt’s own records. There are 409 govt schools in Goa which are not equipped with either computer or science laboratories. And a similar number of schools are yet to be provided digital classrooms, according to state’s data tabled by chief minister and education minister Pramod Sawant in an assembly reply in the session that concluded last month. This data is particularly striking as the NEP implementation emphasises on learning-by-doing and integration of technology in the teaching-learning process. The situation is the worst in Bicholim taluka, where 68 govt schools lack labs and 56 do not have digital classrooms. In Pernem too, 63 and 58 govt schools, respectively, are yet to be equipped with laboratories and provided digital classrooms. This is followed by even the more urbanised Bardez taluka, where 55 schools are awaiting computer and science laboratories and 56 digital classroom equipment. The situation is not any better in Quepem, where 55 schools do not have labs or digital classrooms.
In Canacona, the number is 54 govt schools without labs and smart classrooms.Ironically, the same reply states that an integral part of the state’s strategy in improving learning outcomes as part of NEP implementation is “integration of technology and e-content” in schools.“Use of digital platforms, smart classrooms, and interactive e-content to enhance engagement and understanding,” the reply states about improving learning in students. The reply also states that another important part of NEP implementation is “adoption of competency-based teaching-learning focusing on conceptual understanding rather than rote learning, with emphasis on experiential and holistic development”. This, even as schools are awaiting laboratories. In Dharbandora, 47 schools are lacking in computer or science labs and 46 in digital classrooms.Shockingly, the data states that one school in Salcete even lacks a toilet facility, while 32 schools do not have laboratories and 34 are yet to get digital classrooms.Tiswadi taluka has 32 schools with laboratories and 23 without smart classrooms. In Mormugao, there are 17 schools without digital classrooms and three without labs. All schools in Sanguem, Ponda, and Sattari have laboratories, as per data, with two schools each in Sanguem and Ponda, and six in Sattari, waiting for digital classrooms.
