Bhubaneswar: Beneficiaries under National Food Security Act (NFSA) and State Food Security Scheme (SFSS) will get additional 5kg rice every month under a new scheme called Mukhyamantri Annapurna Yojana (MAPY), which will be implemented from the 2026-27 financial year.
The decision was approved approved by the state cabinet on Saturday.CM Mohan Charan Majhi said additional quota will be over and above the regular entitlements for beneficiaries under NFSA and SFSS. The cabinet approved the distribution of around 19.71 lakh MT of rice per annum from the state pool under the MAPY scheme. Now, 3.28 crore members from 1 crore families are covered under the NFSA and the SFSS in the state. The cabinet has also approved a monthly expenditure of Rs 734 crore, totalling Rs 8,813 crore per annum to be incurred under the scheme, which will be borne by the state govt from its budget for the welfare of public distribution system (PDS) beneficiaries, the CM added. Till now, the free rice quota was 5kg per head under PDS.Civil supplies minister Krushna Chandra Patra said it was a long-pending demand from opposition members that the existing 5kg rice provided to PDS beneficiaries was insufficient to meet the consumption needs of a person. “Hence, CM Majhi decided to come up with a new scheme under which an additional 5kg rice will be provided to each beneficiary. They will get a total of 10kg rice from now on, which will be sufficient for a month,” Patra said on Sunday.
