‘Nari Vandan Act historic step to elevate women’

UP minister Baby Rani Maurya addresses a PC at UP BJP office

Lucknow: UP minister for women and child development, Baby Rani Maurya on Saturday described the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, 2023, as a “historic and transformative” step in the country’s democratic journey.

She asserted that the law would elevate women from just beneficiaries to key decision-makers in governance.Addressing reporters at the state party office, Maurya said the legislation reflected a national commitment to dignity and rights of women under PM Narendra Modi. She said that the Act, envisaging 33% reservation for women in Parliament and state legislatures, would make democracy more inclusive, sensitive and effective.“The participation of women has increased significantly across sectors, including voting, but their representation in politics remains inadequate. This law aims to bridge that gap,” she said.Maurya highlighted that global and Indian experiences show women leaders tend to prioritise welfare-driven sectors. She outlined key initiatives undertaken by the NDA govt to empower women. She said that schemes such as Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, Jal Jeevan Mission and Swachh Bharat Mission improved the quality of life for millions of women.

She also pointed out that women held nearly 46% representation at the panchayat level, demonstrating their leadership capabilities when given opportunities. “This model will now extend to Parliament and assemblies, ensuring more people-centric and accountable policymaking,” she said.“When women are empowered, society becomes stronger. And when society is strong, the nation becomes powerful. The Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam lays the foundation for an inclusive and progressive future,” she stressed.
