‘Threw alcohol bottle after crash’: 21-year-old engineering student arrested for ramming SUV into scooter in Gurgaon; 2 dead

Police have arrested a 21-year-old man for allegedly driving an SUV on the wrong side and crashing into a scooter in Sector 57 on April 4, killing two young men.

GURGAON: Police have arrested a 21-year-old man for allegedly driving an SUV on the wrong side and crashing into a scooter in Sector 57 on April 4, killing two young men. The accused, Akrit Yadav, a resident of Ghaziabad and an engineering student, was arrested by Sector 56 police following an FIR registered in connection with the April 4 crash. The damaged Tata Harrier and the scooter involved in the accident were seized from the spot, and further investigation is underway, police said. The victims were identified as Kartik Suresh (24), an engineering student at a private university in the city, and Ritik Kumar (27), a native of Motihari in Bihar’s East Champaran district, who worked at a call centre in Sector 24 and also drove a bike taxi. According to police, the accident took place in front of Legend Society when the scooter, heading towards Golf Course Extension Road via Dharmamarg, was hit head-on by the SUV coming from the opposite direction.

The impact threw both riders onto the road, leaving them with severe head injuries. Ritik was taken to a private hospital, while Kartik was shifted to a government facility by police. Both succumbed to their injuries during treatment. Kartik’s mother, Rajni, questioned the circumstances surrounding the crash and demanded a thorough probe. “The reckless driver, who himself is pursuing engineering, claimed two innocent lives and ruined two families forever.

It is extremely painful to see that he got bail easily even after killing two people. I have lost my child and want justice. Police should check if the driver was under the influence or at least examine CCTV footage to ascertain the truth.

We are yet to be provided any footage,” she said. An eyewitness, Satvika Kundu, who saw the aftermath from her balcony, alleged suspicious behaviour by the driver. “We saw the young man throw a bottle of alcohol out of the car minutes after the crash.

There was also a cup inside. He was frantically making calls, got into the driver’s seat, and tried to drive away while calling someone to come,” she told TOI. She added that one of the victims appeared to have died on the spot, while the other was still breathing when bystanders rushed to help. “A cab driver stopped and asked us to hurry and put the injured man in his car. Both boys near the vehicle looked very young. The airbags had deployed and the passenger seat belt was loose,” she said. Kundu also claimed that police reached the spot around 12 minutes after she alerted them. Police said the accused driver was arrested and further action in the case is being taken as per procedure. An FIR was registered at Sector 56 police station under sections 281 (rash driving), 106 (causing death by negligence), 324(4) (mischief), and 125(b) (act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the BNS.
