Elon Musk’s social media platform X (formerly Twitter) is changing the way how it pays creators. The platform is now officially deranking “low-quality” content and shifting its financial rewards toward original authors rather than those who simply repost viral clips.
The update, announced by X Product Head Nikita Bier, appears to fix long-standing complaints about ‘engagement farming’ – a practice where accounts post clickbait or stolen videos just to rack up views and cash out.
X to reward the ‘original author’
Under the new rules, X is experimenting with tools that can identify who actually created a piece of content. A portion of the revenue pool is now being specifically reserved for these original creators, as per Bier. Here’s what he said:For this creator payout cycle, we’re experimenting with new tools to identify original authors of content and allocating a portion of revenue to them.Over the last few months, we’ve seen incredible work from original creators on X. Nick Shirley uncovered billions of dollars of fraud in hospice care. Charles Curran parodied global events with studio-quality videos. Will Manidis earned acclaim for his insightful articles on technology and AI.Reposts & commentary will always be a core pillar of X, but our Revenue Sharing program should incentivize original, high-quality content that brings new value to the Timeline.

How do you get paid on X
If you are looking to earn money on the platform, you have to meet a high bar. To be eligible for the creator payout program, you must:
- You must be a subscriber to X Premium or Premium+.
- You need at least 500 followers.
- You must generate at least 5 million organic impressions over a three-month period.
