Canada’s Billie Jean King Cup campaign came to a painful end on April 11 in Astana. The decisive moment came when Bianca Andreescu missed a crucial serve on her opponent’s match point.

That single error handed Kazakhstan the final win they needed. With that, Canada lost the tie 3-1 and missed out on a place in the 2026 Finals. The pressure was already high before Andreescu stepped on court. Kazakhstan was leading 2-1 in the tie. One more win would send them through. Andreescu fought hard, but in the end, one small mistake at the worst time changed everything. Despite the loss, she stayed calm while speaking after the match and focused on the positives.

Bianca Andreescu vs Yulia Putintseva match turns dramatic as Kazakhstan edges Canada

The final singles match between Bianca Andreescu and Yulia Putintseva had everything. It was tight, emotional, and full of long rallies. Andreescu had her chance early. She reached set point in the first-set tiebreak but could not finish it. Putintseva stayed strong and took the set.Andreescu did not back down. She came back in the second set and forced a deciding third set. That final set again went into a tiebreak.

Both players pushed each other to the limit. Then came the final moment. On match point, Andreescu missed her serve badly, sending it wide. That ended the match and the tie.Earlier in the day, Putintseva had already given Kazakhstan a strong start by beating Kayla Cross 6-3, 7-5. Andreescu had kept Canada alive with a straight-sets win over Sonja Zhiyenbayeva. But Kazakhstan regained control by winning the doubles match before Putintseva closed the tie.Speaking after the loss, Andreescu said, “I’m really proud of the way I played and how we showed up as a team. We did everything we could. Our captain, Marie-Ève Pelletier, was with us the whole way. I really enjoyed the week – and sometimes, that’s tennis.”Putintseva also showed respect for her opponent. She said, “I was fighting like there was no tomorrow, every single game and every single point. She was fighting as well.

I think we both deserved the win, but someone has to win. Today, it was me, but it could have been her.”This win sends Kazakhstan into the 2026 Billie Jean King Cup Finals, even without Elena Rybakina in the team. Canada, who won the title in 2023, will now move to the Playoffs later this year.Andreescu, currently ranked World No. 130, has been working her way back. She has already won two lower-level titles in Florida this year and finished runner-up in Linz. This match showed she is close to finding her top form again.
