In Zubeen’s memory, city plans low-key Bihu

Guwahati: Amid a palpable sense of loss following the death of Zubeen Garg, Bihu committees across the city are preparing to observe Rongali Bihu — the Assamese New Year — with a blend of celebration and remembrance.

Known for his immense contribution to Assamese music and culture, Zubeen’s absence has cast a shadow over what is otherwise the most vibrant time of the year.Several organisers said that while preparations are on in full swing, there is a conscious effort to honour the legacy of the late artist. They have collectively decided to dedicate the first day of the year to his memory, where local artists are scheduled to perform his songs.“Earlier, we had decided to call off the Bihu programme. But then, we remembered how positive Zubeen was — he would never have cancelled the celebration. Not celebrating would have felt like forgetting his legacy. Zubeen always performed during Bihu functions. However, this time it will be different, as we will have a very low-key celebration. We have dedicated the 14th of this month as a tribute to him, where artists will perform his songs,” said Rubul Kalita, president of the Paschim Guwahati Bihu Sanmilan.

Recalling the early days of Rongali Bihu, Kalita said Zubeen performed his first show at Sonaram field in Bharalumukh, where he accompanied Jitul Sonowal on the guitar.Members of the Noonmati Bihu Sanmilan expressed deep grief, recalling that Zubeen used to perform at every Bihu programme. To commemorate the occasion, they will observe a moment of silence and sing his songs.Meanwhile, in the Chandmari area of the city, the Pub Guwahati Bihu Sanmilan is also preparing for the festival and will pay tribute to Zubeen. Himanta Thakuriya, general secretary of the committee, said, “As painful as it is, cancelling the programme would not be right, as several people look forward to this day. Moreover, many artists are associated with it, and cancelling it would be demoralising for them. Even Zubeen would not have agreed.

There were also discussions among organisers about inviting artists like Papon; however, they said he declined to perform as a mark of respect and mourning.
