Mahesh Kale remembers Asha Bhosle: She was like a god-like figure to me

Classical vocalist Mahesh Kale fondly remembers Asha Bhosle, describing her as a “God-like figure” and a “human being behind the legend” who possessed disarming warmth and infectious enthusiasm. Kale shared a personal connection, calling her ‘Atya’ and recalling her hospitality and an unfulfilled wish to sing for her.

As tributes pour in from across the music fraternity, classical vocalist Mahesh Kale shared a deeply personal remembrance of the legendary Asha Bhosle; a figure he says he placed on a pedestal beyond ordinary admiration. ‘A GOD-LIKE PRESENCE’ For Mahesh Kale, Asha Bhosle was not just a musical icon but someone who occupied a sacred space in his life. “There are a few people whom you place on such a pedestal that they become immortal, almost God-like figures to you… Asha tai has always been one such person for me,” he said. While acknowledging her long and illustrious life, Kale admitted that coming to terms with her passing has been difficult. “Of course, she has lived a glorious life of 92 years, but accepting this truth in itself feels like a task for me right now,” he added. A PERSONAL BOND BEYOND MUSIC Kale’s connection with Asha Bhosle extended beyond admiration, it was rooted in a familial and cultural bond. “The personal connection I share is that I address her as ‘Atya,’ as she is my Guruji’s sister,” he shared. “I’ve seen her visit his home in the 90s to tie a Rakhi to him, and later, we crossed paths again when she appeared as a guest judge on a reality show that I was judging.” It was during these interactions that Kale discovered the person behind the legend.

“That is where I got to experience the human being behind the legend, and that person was incredibly endearing,” he said. THE WARMTH BEHIND THE LEGEND Kale fondly recalled Asha Bhosle’s ability to instantly put people at ease, an attribute he believes defines true greatness. “You know, the hallmark of a true legend or a great person is their ability to put you at such disarming ease that you begin to forget who they really are.

Asha tai had that rare quality… along with an infectious enthusiasm and a deep love for cooking,” he said. Her warmth extended beyond words, often expressed through her love for food and hospitality. “She even invited me over, saying, ‘If you like to eat, I love to cook… I will cook for you.’ She would say, ‘If you come to Dubai, visit my restaurant.’” AN UNFULFILLED WISH Among the many memories, one moment stands out for Kale—an invitation that remained unrealised. “She also mentioned that she would love to hear me sing someday. And as I was leaving, she said, ‘Come home, I’ll cook for you, I’ll feed you… and then you can sing for me.’ Unfortunately, that never happened…” The unfinished promise now lingers as a poignant reminder of a bond that could have grown even deeper.
