Silchar: Police seized 53.89 kg of suspected beef from two hotels in Hailakandi district and arrested four persons, officials said on Monday.Acting on specific inputs, a team from Lala police station on Sunday evening conducted searches at two hotels in the Monacherra area.
During the raid at one hotel, 21.99 kg of suspected beef was recovered from a refrigerator in the kitchen.
A subsequent search at another hotel led to the seizure of another 31.9 kg, taking the total to 53.89 kg.Four individuals were arrested in connection with the case. They were identified as Nazrul Islam Borbhuiya (40) of Rajyeshwarpur, Abu Salam Majarbhuiya (30), Ibadur Rahman Choudhury (25), and Imdadur Rahman Choudhury (26) from Borbond in the district.Police said the accused failed to produce any valid documents regarding the source or legality of the meat during the raids. They were detained on the spot and later formally arrested.The seized meat was sealed in the presence of independent witnesses, and separate seizure lists were prepared for both establishments. Samples have been sent to the district veterinary officer for scientific examination to ascertain the nature of the meat.
The remaining stock has been preserved in a cold storage at a govt veterinary facility.Officials also seized four mobile phones from the accused for further investigation.Police suspect that, apart from illegal sale, the case may be linked to unlawful slaughter activities in the area. Efforts are on to trace a possible larger network, officials added.
