Strict deadlines issued to prevent waterlogging in city this monsoon

Bihar Urban Infrastructure Development Corporation (Buidco) has mandated strict April 30 and May 15 deadlines for new drainage pumping stations and maintenance works, respectively. A joint meeting with Patna Municipal Corporation reviewed monsoon preparedness, emphasizing project completion, sump house inspections, sluice gate repairs, and drain desilting. Continuous monitoring of weather forecasts is also crucial for swift action.

Patna: The Bihar Urban Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (Buidco) has set strict deadlines to tackle waterlogging during the monsoon season, directing the officials that all new drainage pumping stations (DPS) must be ready by April 30, while all maintenance works should be fully completed by May 15.A high-level joint meeting to review monsoon preparedness was held on Monday between the Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Buidco. Chaired by Animesh Kumar Parashar, managing director of Buidco, the meeting was attended by municipal commissioner Yashpal Meena.Through a detailed presentation, officials reviewed all ongoing and recently completed Buidco projects in the PMC area, directly related to stormwater drainage.

These included works under the Namami Gange project, construction of roads and drains, repair of damaged slabs and manholes, linking of smaller drains to main Buidco drains, enhancement of sump house capacity, and repair of sluice gates.The MD issued instructions to complete all pre-monsoon works on priority. He directed that after cleaning, repair and maintenance of all sump houses and pumping stations, the executive officers concerned must personally inspect the sites to verify the systems.

Officials were also told to thoroughly clean all sluice gates and replace old or damaged ones wherever necessary, with special focus on ensuring complete desilting of drains, especially near the railway overbridge at Chhotki Nala.Officials were further instructed to continuously monitor monsoon forecasts issued by the Meteorological Department and remain in alert mode for immediate action. The PMC has already identified all vulnerable waterlogging spots and prepared a comprehensive drainage strategy to ensure swift drainage of rainwater.

The PMC is ensuring that no ongoing projects by any agency create additional drainage problems or lead to water accumulation.The meeting was attended by additional municipal commissioner Rajan Sinha, all executive officers and executive engineers of PMC, along with project directors, deputy project directors, assistant project directors of Buidco for Patna district, officials from Buidco’s mechanical wing, and engineers from Buidco headquarters.
