Mumbai court denies bail to BEST bus driver accused of fatal electric bus crash

4 people were killed and 14 others injured after a BEST bus driver lost control of the vehicle while taking a tight U-turn outside Bhandup (W) railway station and rammed pedestrians

MUMBAI: Sessions court in Mumbai, on April 10, denied bail to BEST bus driver Santosh Sawant, accused of killing four and injuring 12 people when one electric bus went out of control near Bhandup Railway Station and ran over people at 11.30 pm on Dec 29, 2025.Sawant was driving the bus, and the additional sessions judge Y P Manathkar, rejecting the defence plea that his name was not on the training list, said his lack of knowledge about driving an e-vehicle “increases the magnitude” of the crime. The court said, “It was not a casual accident” and could have been avoided if the accused “plainly” refused to drive the vehicle he barely knew how to operate. The defence argued that a lack of proper training reduced his legal culpability.Sawant was unaware of the “ABC of the driving technique of the bus”.“He casually seated on driver seat, allowed the bus to become uncontrolled and let the consequences happen — running over the bus upon hundreds of people,” the court observed.
