FIR against protesters who blocked highway in Faridabad’s Palwal over wage hike

The protesters had gathered on the Delhi-Agra National Highway (NH-19) on Monday, staged a demonstration and blocked the road for about 2 hours.

Gurgaon: A day after several employees of a private company blocked the Delhi-Agra National Highway (NH-19) in Palwal demanding a salary hike, police have registered a case against unidentified persons and launched efforts to locate them using CCTV footage.According to an officer, the accused have been booked under sections 190 (unlawful assembly), 191(2) (rioting) and 285 (causing danger or obstruction in public ways or lines of navigation) of the BNS, along with provisions of the Highway Act. The action was initiated based on a complaint filed by a constable posted at Gadpuri police station, he said. “No arrests have been made yet,” he added. The protest took place on Monday around 9am near Prithla, where a large number of workers gathered on the highway, blocked the road, raised slogans and staged a demonstration.

The protesters were demanding wages in line with govt-mandated norms. They said their demand was pending for a long time adding that inadequate pay had made it difficult for them to manage their household expenses. The blockade brought traffic to a complete halt for nearly two hours, causing significant inconvenience to commuters amid the rising temperature.Traffic resumed only after teams from Gadpuri police station, along with senior officers, reached the spot and persuaded the protesters to disperse. Palwal city magistrate, who also came to meet the workers, assured them that the order on minimum wages would be ensured per govt norms soon.

Further action will be taken once the accused are identified, the officer said.Meanwhile in a separate incident in Faridabad, police on Tuesday removed employees staging a sit-in protest over a wage hike outside a company office in Sector 37. The workers’ demonstration began at 7am and continued till 2pm.According to police, officers attempted to persuade the employees to call off the protest but they refused. Following this, senior police officers intervened and assured them that their demands would be met and cleared the area.Around 20 to 25 employees were detained during the operation but were released later, an officer said. While the protesting employees alleged that police forcibly removed them and were trying to suppress their demands, police maintained their action was necessary to maintain law and order. No case was registered in the matter till the time of going to press.
