Peru travel rules for Indians explained: What the recent Bengaluru airport incident reveals

Peru is one of the top destinations for international travelers who come here in droves in search of historical landmarks, stunning views, and delectable food items. The Inca heritage, represented by places like Machu Picchu, combined with natural attractions such as the Amazonian rainforest, create a rich tapestry that is perfect for a cultural experience.

However, a new situation regarding Indians visiting the country reveals another important aspect of travel—the necessity to secure proper visas.According to a report published by NDTV Travel, back in June 2024, a family from India attempted to fly to Peru in order to take their long-awaited vacation. This family had already purchased their business class tickets ahead of time and were prepared to set out. The trip did not happen because the airline refused to allow them onboard due to a lack of a Peruvian visa. The case went to court as there was disagreement between the airline and passengers regarding Peru’s visa exemptions policy for Indian nationals.

Do Indians need a visa for Peru?

The answer to the question may be a little bit complex because Indian citizens can travel to Peru without a visa but under some strict rules. As stated in the guidelines provided by the Embassy of the Republic of Peru in India, an Indian national may enter Peru visa-free if he or she meets the following requirements:

  1. He or she should have a valid visa from any of the following areas:
  • The United States
  • The United Kingdom
  • Canada
  • Australia
  • Schengen Area countries
  1. This visa should be valid for at least six months upon entering Peru, even if this visa was never used previously,
  2. An Indian citizen who is a permanent resident of any of the mentioned areas can also enter Peru visa-free.

How long can one stay in Peru?

Under this exemption, one is permitted to remain in Peru for 180 days within a period of one year.

This may be taken as a continuous period or divided among several entries into Peru. In the latter case, the actual period that will be allocated depends on the discretion of the immigration officials during arrival.

Important considerations before travel

Here’s where things might go wrong for some travellers. Even if you satisfy all requirements to be eligible for visa exemption, there are some important factors to consider:

  • Type of visa required: Travel or business visas are acceptable, but transit, student or short-term visas may not always qualify.
  • Validity of visa: The supporting visa should have at least six months validity left.
  • Interpretation by airlines: It is important to remember that airlines will have their own interpretations of the entry requirements.

Since airlines are required to ensure the repatriation of those denied entry into Peru, they tend to take an overly conservative approach.

Documents you should carry

Regardless of whether you will be travelling on a visa exemption or Peruvian visa, ensure that you have all the required paperwork with you. You may be requested to provide the following documentation:

  • Confirmed tickets for departure from Peru
  • Documentation confirming that you can travel into your next destination
  • Proof of financial stability such as bank statements
  • Details of where you will be staying in Peru (hotel bookings)
  • Valid passport (minimum of six months remaining validity)
  • Travel insurance (optional but recommended)

Entry process on arrival

Upon arrival in Peru, you must fill out the Tarjeta Andina de Migración (TAM), which is now available through the TAM Virtual process. The above case clearly brings out one important aspect of traveling overseas: having the right to travel is not always enough for boarding a flight. Visa waivers, particularly when linked to other countries’ visas, may be interpreted differently by the airline staff. For Indian travelers heading for Peru, the best strategy would be to:

  • Check the requirements with the airline before flying
  • Print embassy guidelines on visas
  • Ensure your visa is valid and falls under the correct category

Peru is still a remarkable place, but from the above case, one learns that preparation must extend far beyond travel plans and bookings.
