Alex Manninger, the former Arsenal and Austria goalkeeper, has died at the age of 48 after a tragic accident in Austria. Police confirmed that his car was hit by a train at a level crossing near Salzburg early in the morning.

Despite rescue efforts, he could not be saved. The news has shocked the football world, with clubs and former teammates sharing emotional messages.

The accident happened around 08:20 local time near Salzburg, according to Austrian police. Alex Manninger was alone in his car when it was struck by a train at a level crossing.Police said emergency teams quickly reached the spot. First responders used a defibrillator after pulling him out of the car, which had been dragged along the tracks.

Even with all efforts, they could not bring him back. The train driver was not hurt.The Austrian Football Association’s sporting director, Peter Schottel, shared a heartfelt message. He said Manninger was “an outstanding ambassador for Austrian football” and praised his calm nature and professionalism on and off the pitch.Clubs across Europe also reacted. Arsenal said they were “shocked and deeply saddened,” while Red Bull Salzburg said they “mourn” their former player.

Liverpool also expressed sadness over the news.

Later, he joined Liverpool at age 39 but did not play any matches.Even though he was not always the first-choice goalkeeper, his reliability and calm presence made him respected everywhere he played.
