5 things you should never discuss at work

People often talk about climbing the corporate ladder, but seldom do they share how to survive. Your skills or work ethic alone aren’t always enough to guarantee professional success. Knowing what to share and what to keep to yourself plays a crucial role. Every conversation carries weight. While some topics can help you win, others can derail your career faster than a missed deadline. Here are five subjects you should keep off-limits in the office.

How close you live to the office

How close you live to the office

Unless you enjoy being the go-to “last-minute savior” for after-hours tasks, zip it. Do not share details about your short commute. The moment your colleague or manager knows you live ten minutes away, you will become the go-to person to run errands outside your CTC. When something urgent comes up at 9 p.m. on a Friday, you will be on their speed dial. So don’t share your proximity to the office, because it is nobody’s business. Let them think you live across the ocean.

Your salary

Your salary

No matter how much chemistry you and your colleagues have, do not discuss your salary with them. Sharing this piece of information is like handing out ammo for gossip. When you discuss your salary, someone is always going to feel underpaid, and it’ll just come back to bite you. Maybe you negotiated better, or perhaps you have a different job title—none of these will matter. So don’t give them that ammo.

Your dating life

Your dating life

You may argue that your work wife or husband is your best friend, but that may not necessarily be true. At the end of the day, everyone is looking out for themselves. So do not discuss your love life with your colleagues. Nobody needs to know about your late-night rendezvous or breakups. That tea will make its way around faster than an office email. Your colleagues will gossip about who you are seeing, judge your choices, and weaponize your vulnerability in future conflicts. Don’t give them that.

Your hobbies

Your hobbies

If you mention that you spend hours gaming, partying, or working on personal projects, don’t act shocked when they question your “work ethic.” You read that right. Now read it again. Regardless of how deeply connected you are to your boss, they will comment every time you ask for time off or submit a deadline-heavy project. Most importantly, you should have boundaries. People at work don’t have to know the person you are outside those office premises. That’s none of their business—until you make it so.

Your side hustle

6/6

Your side hustle

Do not share your life outside work with people at work. Read this again. Maybe chant it every time you feel like you have to. Keep your business or side hustle outside office chatter. If your employer finds out you are building something on the side, they may wonder if you’re distracted, question your loyalty, or worse, try to fire you. You don’t want that.

Surviving in the corporate world is about playing it right. So play your cards like a maestro.
