Travis Kelce’s NFL future in doubt as Kansas City Chiefs quietly prepare his replacement as his wedding nears

The Kansas City Chiefs are already planning for life after Travis Kelce despite his 2026 return. The team has shown interest in Oregon tight end Kenyon Sadiq as a potential successor. With contract details hinting at a possible exit after 2026, Kansas City appears focused on building a smooth transition for the future.

The future may still belong to Travis Kelce, but the Kansas City Chiefs are already thinking a step ahead. Even after the veteran tight end confirmed he will return for the 2026 season, subtle signals from the franchise suggest long-term planning is quietly underway.

For a team built on sustained dominance, standing still has never been part of the blueprint. That mindset is now shaping their draft outlook. While Kelce remains a central piece of the offense led by Patrick Mahomes, the front office appears keen on preparing for the inevitable transition. And one name has started to surface more often than others.

Chiefs eye future tight end solution as Kelce era nears turning point

Oregon standout Kenyon Sadiq has quickly emerged as a serious option for Kansas City Chiefs.

The team itself added fuel to the conversation by highlighting his college production, noting, “This prospect led all FBS tight ends with eight touchdown grabs last season.” That public endorsement did not go unnoticed.League insiders believe the Chiefs are weighing multiple needs with their top draft pick, but Sadiq remains firmly in the mix. “I think at No. 9, you’re looking at corner, receiver and edge as possibilities, with the need to backstop the tackle position at some point in the draft,” Albert Breer wrote.

“Also, the idea of taking Oregon’s Kenyon Sadiq at the very least is a consideration.”The appeal is obvious. Sadiq offers immediate upside while also fitting into a long-term vision. Analysts see him as more than just depth. He could grow into a central figure in the offense. “Even the short-term potential of a Patrick Mahomes-led offense featuring Kelce, Sadiq, [Kenneth] Walker and Xavier Worthy is something I’d buy a ticket to see,” Nick Baumgardner said. “Sadiq’s long-term potential as Kelce’s successor and Mahomes’ new best friend is obvious. He is an extremely special athlete and the prototype for a modern tight end prospect — he can play inline and hold his own against tackles and edges; he’s an excellent space blocker who can deliver a blow on the move; he’s big enough to body small defensive backs and fast enough to run around many of them.”There is also a financial layer to this strategy. “The Chiefs have a long-standing policy of not doing void years, and the above two rules allow them to sidestep that (using a tactic the Eagles have over the years),” Breer wrote.“Kelce has minimum salaries built into dummy years in 2027 and 2028, with a $40 million guarantee for 2028 vesting June 8 of next year—which will force the Chiefs to release him by then, and allow for them to spread the dead money out, since the date falls after June 1.”For now, Travis Kelce remains the heartbeat of Kansas City’s offense. But the groundwork for life after him is no longer a distant thought. It is already in motion.
