France legend Marcel Desailly believes Kylian Mbappe may have had sleepless nights after seeing Paris Saint-Germain win the Champions League without him. The former defender suggested that watching his old club succeed, while one of his close teammates also claimed the Ballon d’Or, could have been a difficult moment for the Real Madrid star to digest.Notably, Mbappe left Paris Saint-Germain in 2024 to join Real Madrid in search of European glory and individual recognition. While his move fulfilled a childhood dream, Desailly has warned that success at Madrid may not come instantly. The French forward has already impressed with his goal-scoring form, but major trophies have so far remained out of reach, raising questions about how long he may need to wait.
Did Kylian Mbappe make the right move to Real Madrid?
Marcel Desailly recently spoke to Goal and suggested that Kylian Mbappe likely experienced frustration after his departure from Paris Saint-Germain coincided with the club finally achieving European success.
He indicated that it is natural for a player to feel uneasy when a former team wins the biggest prize, especially when a close teammate also secures football’s top individual honour. However, he believes Mbappe remains focused and driven by his passion for the game.
The 27-year-old has enjoyed a strong start in Spain. His goal numbers have been impressive across competitions. His numbers have shown his consistency and quality in front of goal.
Despite this, the lack of silverware has been noticeable. Desailly pointed out that adapting to a new system and balancing multiple star players has not been easy for Madrid. Early-season issues around positioning and team chemistry affected performances.Desailly also made it clear that he does not expect Mbappe to leave Madrid anytime soon. He discussed that the Real Madrid club is the perfect stage for the forward and believes there is no bigger destination in world football.
According to him, Mbappe may stay for several years before considering a new challenge later in his career. However, he also warned that Madrid could face a period without major trophies. He suggested that Mbappe might have to endure three to four years without winning top honours, even while performing at the high level across multiple leagues and tournaments.
