Dunia Sibomana-Rodriguez carries a story that begins far from any wrestling mat. At six years old in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, his life changed in an instant during a violent chimpanzee attack that left lasting physical and emotional scars.

Years later, he stands as a champion in Long Island, New York, his path shaped by hard work and training more than anything else. The distance between those two moments feels almost impossible to measure. From learning a new language to rebuilding his face through multiple surgeries, Sibomana-Rodriguez quietly pieced together a life that once seemed uncertain.

The attack itself was devastating. Dunia Sibomana-Rodriguez’s cousin did not survive, and both he and his brother were left seriously injured.

He lost a finger and suffered major damage to his face, lips, and ear. “The first time I saw my face, it was shocking,” he recalled, a memory that still carries weight years later. Two years after the attack, he arrived in the United States for treatment. At Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, doctors began a long process of reconstruction that would stretch across more than a dozen surgeries. “I’ve had about 16 surgeries now,” he said, speaking with a calm honesty that reflects how much he has endured.

Life off the operating table brought its own challenges. He spoke only Swahili when he arrived, adjusting to a new country while living with foster families in Brooklyn and Long Island. There were difficult moments, including being treated differently because of his appearance. “I was being called names and I just being mistreated,” he shared.Everything began to shift when he found wrestling. Introduced to the sport by coach Miguel Rodriguez, who later adopted him, Sibomana-Rodriguez discovered something that felt natural.

“Even though I didn’t know much about it, wrestling was just the right one for me,” he said. From there, progress came steadily. He grew into one of the top high school wrestlers in New York, winning five Nassau County titles, three state championships, and eventually a national title. The success did not erase the past, but it gave it context.“I don’t think I would have ever thought I’d be here, coming from my country and ending up being a good wrestler,” he said, a reflection that feels both simple and powerful.

From survival to scholarship dreams: Dunia Sibomana-Rodriguez is ready for the next stage

Now 18, Sibomana-Rodriguez is preparing for the next step. He is set to attend the University of North Carolina on a scholarship, carrying both athletic promise and a story that reaches far beyond sport. He continues to undergo medical care, aware that more procedures may still lie ahead. He keeps his focus forward, grounded in a belief that identity is something you build yourself. “Don’t let people determine who you are. And you should make your own story.”What a journey, indeed. Inspiring.
