Real Madrid is under scrutiny after their UEFA Champions League quarter-final exit against Bayern Munich. The Spanish giants lost 4-3 in the second leg in Munich, which resulted in a 6-4 aggregate defeat.
Despite taking an early lead through Arda Guler, Madrid failed to hold their advantage in a high-scoring clash that ended their European hopes this season. The defeat has sparked criticism from former striker and sporting director Predrag Mijatovic. Especially after he pointed towards Vinicius Junior. While the Brazilian has maintained consistent numbers this season, his performance in the crucial game drew attention.
Mijatovic believes that improving his mindset in big matches could be key for both the player and the team moving forward.
Will Vinicius Jr be able to step up as leader in big games for Real Madrid
Predrag Mijatovic acknowledged that Vinicius has delivered strong performances over the years and often rises to the occasion. However, he suggested that the winger needs to adjust certain aspects of his behavior on the pitch. According to him, while some may think his criticism is harsh, there are elements in Vinicius’ approach that still require improvement, even though his importance to the team remains unquestioned.
He further explained that Madrid currently lack a true leader on the field. In his view, being the top scorer does not automatically make someone a leader. He pointed out that even legends like Zinedine Zidane had other figures leading their teams, such as Didier Deschamps. Mijatovic stressed that Madrid now need a commanding presence. Similar to past icons like Fernando Hierro, Sergio Ramos, or Raul Gonzalez. He added that the team requires someone who can organize players on the field and guide them during difficult moments.
While Madrid have quality across the squad, he feels there is no strong voice to take control when things go wrong. The concerns extend beyond individual performances. Madrid are at risk of ending the season without a major trophy. They have already lost to FC Barcelona in the Supercopa de España final and have been knocked out of both the Copa del Rey and Champions League. With a significant points gap in La Liga, their title hopes also appear slim.Mijatovic warned that going multiple seasons without silverware is a serious issue for a club of Madrid’s stature. He noted that while modern football is competitive and winning everything is difficult, expectations at Madrid remain extremely high.
