Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings: ‘My real contribution at Netflix wasn't a single decision. It was …’

Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings announced his exit from the company’s board recently, marking the end of nearly three decades at the streaming giant he co-founded in 1997. Announcing the exit, Reed Hastings said that his biggest impact at Netflix was not one bold decision, but building a culture that focused on long-term success and user experience.

In a letter to shareholders, Hastings said, “My real contribution at Netflix wasn’t a single decision,” adding that his focus was on creating a company centred around “member joy” and lasting value.

End of an era at Netflix

Netflix confirmed that Hastings will not seek re-election to its board at the company’s annual meeting in June. This will mark his final formal role at the company. He had already stepped down as co-CEO in 2023 and continued as chairman until now. With his exit, co-CEOs Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters will take full charge of the company’s leadership. Netflix said Hastings’ departure is not linked to any disagreement, and both executives credited him for shaping the company’s direction over the years.

A legacy beyond one decision

Reed Hastings played a key role in transforming Netflix into a global streaming platform available in over 130 countries. The company said his leadership helped build a culture of innovation and high performance, which became central to its success.Reflecting on his journey, Hastings highlighted Netflix’s global expansion in 2016 as one of his most memorable moments, when the service became available to audiences around the world.

Here’s what Reed Hastings said

“Netflix changed my life in so many ways, and my all‑time favourite memory was January 2016, when we enabled nearly the entire planet to enjoy our service. My real contribution at Netflix wasn’t a single decision; it was a focus on member joy, building a culture that others could inherit and improve, and building a company that could be both beloved by members and wildly successful for generations to come. A special thanks to Greg and Ted, whose commitment to Netflix’s greatness is so strong that I can now focus on new things.”
