New Delhi: Delhi High Court has expressed strong displeasure over the delay by the state govt in constituting the Grievance Redressal and Dispute Resolution Committee for street vendors, terming the delay “tardy and inefficient.
”In a recent order, the high court pointed out that the committee had still not been constituted even though court directed its formation nearly two years ago and now gave three weeks to govt to make the panel functional.During the hearing a senior officer of the urban development department informed court that the proposal for the constitution of the committee — first initiated on Sept 22, last year — had been returned from the office of the urban development minister on March 23, 2026.
The officer submitted that a fresh proposal, after addressing the observations raised, had been resubmitted to the competent authority on March 25, 2026.Taking note of the submission, the high court said, “hoped and expected that the GNCTD would act with greater efficiency and make the necessary appointment expeditiously. Let the same be done latest within a period of three weeks from today.”It warned that if the directions are not complied with, the secretary, department of urban development, would have to join the proceedings virtually on the next date of hearing and posted the matter for further hearing on May 12.
Earlier this year the court had granted six weeks to the state govt to constitute the committee after it assured that expeditious steps would be taken. Govt had then assured HC that “it will be our best endeavour to complete the necessary process and to notify the constitution of the Grievance Redressal and Dispute Resolution Committee, thereby ensuring full compliance with the statutory requirements.”
