TIRUPATI: An 80-year-old woman was raped by an unidentified intruder while she was asleep at home, in the early hours of Sunday in Tirupati.According to Tirupati east police inspector K Srinivasulu, the woman’s son and other family members were asleep on the first floor of the house, located at Mallaiahgunta near Tataiahgunta Gangamma temple, when the incident occurred.
The accused entered the house, assaulted the woman, and raped her, police said. He is absconding.When the family woke up next morning, they found the woman in a traumatised state. She narrated the ordeal to them, after which they rushed her to a local hospital where doctors confirmed that she had been raped. “Based on a complaint lodged by the woman, we have registered a case under relevant sections of the BNS Act. Doctors said her condition is stable and is undergoing treatment for her injuries. Tirupati MP Dr M Gurumoorthy expressed shock over the incident. “What is more disturbing is the manner in which an elderly woman was sexually assaulted in her own house. This incident once again reflects the sorry state of policing,” the MP said, demanding that police arrest the accused.(The victim’s identity has not been revealed to protect her privacy as per Supreme court directives on cases related to sexual assault)
