Believe it or not: Dinos break record, have a roaring party

The University of Calgary in Canada celebrated its 60th birthday with a dress-up party that could give Jurassic Park a run for its money! Altogether 682 people donned dinosaur costumes to stomp across campus and right into the record book.

They roared past the previous record for the largest gathering of people dressed as dinosaurs held by the Cox Science Center and Aquarium in West Palm Beach, Florida. The dinos literally danced into the record book! The prehistoric party unfolded outside the Taylor Family Digital Library, where participants waited for the Guinness adjudicator to count every prehistoric tail and head. The crowd danced to the Heebie-jeebies and sang We Are the Champions by Queen.

Why do this? For university employee Laura Wan, it was the ultimate loophole: An official excuse to wear blow-up suits in public. For UC President Ed McCauley, it was an opportunity to use the ultimate pun to declare “The old record is extinct.

The recordWhen the university community day was rebranded, it attracted a chaotic mix of donors, students, and alumni who all shared one common goal – looking absolutely ridiculous for the sake of science (and glory). “We knew we had broken it (the record) as soon as Guinness said ‘six’… After that, no one heard anything. We were screaming and hugging,” a student said.
