Farmers demand realignment of Ganga expressway in Bijnor

Bijnor: Farmers and village heads in Bijnor district have handed a memorandum to the DM, addressed to the CM, demanding a change in the proposed route of the Ganga Expressway. The expressway is planned to connect western Uttar Pradesh to Haridwar and is currently under survey in multiple villages of the district.According to the memorandum, the ongoing survey covers villages including Peda, Mirzapur Puran, Mohammadpur Nauabad, Ismailpur, Nangli, Chaukpuri, Nasiri, Kachhpura, Nayagaon, Alipur Makhan and Gajraula Achpal.Residents expressed concern that acquisition of fertile agricultural land for the project would directly threaten the livelihood of marginal farmers. Protesters urged authorities to reroute the expressway closer to the Ganga river, arguing that hundreds of hectares of govt land near the river could be used instead of acquiring expensive private farmland.

They proposed that the highway should pass through Daranagar Ganj and Jahanabad and connect Balawali and Nangalsoti before linking to Haridwar. The farmers also claimed that building the expressway near the river would provide relief to flood-affected communities and help preserve agricultural land, aligning with govt policies aimed at protecting cultivable land. They warned that failure to change the alignment could destroy thousands of hectares of fertile land and leave many farmers landless. The memorandum was submitted by representatives including district president Rajendra Singh of the Rashtriya Lok Dal Kisan Morcha and village heads.
