Rights panel orders safety audit after Udaipur student death and Jaipur sewer tragedy

Jaipur: Taking cognisance of two separate fatal incidents — the death of an eight-year-old student in Udaipur and two sanitation workers in Jaipur — the Rajasthan State Human Rights Commission Tuesday issued directions to strengthen safety measures and fix accountability. In the Udaipur case, the Commission directed the state sports department to issue a circular mandating inspection of sports equipment in schools, including poles, nets and playground structures. The order followed the death of a Class III student at St. Anthony School in Govardhan Vilas, where a handball pole reportedly collapsed during a games period Monday.Terming the incident “deeply unfortunate,” Commission chairperson Justice G R Moolchandani stressed the need for strict safety protocols in educational institutions.

The Commission also asked district authorities, police and the education department to conduct inspections and submit a detailed factual report. It further directed that appropriate compensation be provided to the victim’s family. The matter is scheduled for hearing on May 19, 2026.In a separate case, the Commission took serious note of the death of two sanitation workers in a sewer in Jhotwara area. Calling the incident grave, it ordered action against responsible officials, contractors and representatives, and mandated immediate financial compensation to the victims’ families.

Detailed reports have been sought from the Jaipur district collector, police commissioner, municipal corporation officials and the social justice department. The Commission has also ordered the constitution of a committee to probe the incident.Emphasising compliance with Supreme Court guidelines, it directed that no sanitation worker be allowed to enter sewers without proper safety gear and equipment. Authorities have also been asked to issue public advisories. The matter will be reviewed on May 18, 2026.
