The San Diego Padres have made a timely move to stabilise their pitching staff, bringing in veteran right-hander Lucas Giolito on a short-term deal. With injuries piling up and expectations rising, the franchise has acted decisively to secure a rotation that has held firm despite setbacks.Giolito’s arrival comes at a crucial point in the season. San Diego sits among the league’s top contenders, yet its rotation has been stretched thin. This signing gives the club a proven starter who still has something to prove.

Lucas Giolito signs with the San Diego Padres

The San Diego Padres have officially added Giolito on a one-year contract, ending a surprisingly long wait for one of the last notable free agents. Even weeks into the season, the 31-year-old remained unsigned, despite a track record that many clubs value.

Manager Craig Stammen addressed the signing, saying, “It’s awesome that we signed Lucas. Looking forward to getting him here with the big league team, but he’s got to be built up a little bit. He brings a track record of a lot of success in the big leagues, and he’s still only 31 years old, so we’ve got a young starting pitcher that we’ve added into the fold, and hopefully in his prime.”Giolito will begin his stint in the minors to build stamina before joining the major league squad.

Lucas Giolito’s contract details

Financially, the deal is modest but layered with incentives. Giolito is guaranteed $2,775,401, with a mutual option for 2027 that adds flexibility for both sides. Another report places the structure closer to a $3 million package, including a $1.5 million base salary and a $1.5 million buyout tied to the option, along with performance-based escalators. The Padres avoid long-term risk, while Giolito gets a platform to rebuild value.

His own words earlier this month reflect that mindset: “The last few months has been very strange to where talks (with teams) seem like they’re heating up and it’s like, ‘Oh, OK, never mind.’ I just want to play for close to what my value is… So it’s like, ‘All right, cool, give me something that’s relatively close to that, and let’s go and get it.

’”

What can Lucas Giolito offer the San Diego Padres?

San Diego’s rotation has been hit hard. Nick Pivetta is sidelined with an elbow issue, Joe Musgrove continues his recovery, and Yu Darvish is out long-term.

Despite this, the team has maintained one of the league’s best ERAs.

Giolito steps into this environment as both insurance and upside. He brings experience, durability, and a four-pitch mix that can navigate deep line-ups. If he finds rhythm early, he could quickly move from depth piece to key contributor.

Lucas Giolito’s stats before joining the San Diego Padres

Giolito’s recent numbers tell a story of his prowess. With the Boston Red Sox last season, he posted a 3.41 ERA across 26 starts, showing strong recovery after elbow surgery wiped out his previous year.

His overall career record stands at 71-66 with a 4.30 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP.There was a turning point during the 2025 campaign. After a slow start, he delivered a dominant stretch, recording a 2.51 ERA over his final 19 outings. That run reminded teams of the pitcher who once earned All-Star honours and threw a no-hitter in 2020.
