Universal Pictures has officially confirmed Hollywood stars Michael B Jordan and Austin Butler as the leads of “Miami Vice ’85”, the big-screen reboot of the iconic 1980s American TV series.The film, which will open in cinemas in the US on August 6, 2027, will be directed by Joseph Kosinski of “Top Gun: Maverick” and “F1” fame. The project will be filmed for IMAX, reported Variety.Oscar winner Jordan will play Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs, while Butler steps into the role of James “Sonny” Crockett.The two characters were originally portrayed by Philip Michael Thomas and Don Johnson in the original NBC series, which ran from 1984 to 1990. In filmmaker Michael Mann’s 2006 big-screen adaptation, Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx played the duo.The new film will be set in the period, exploring the glamour and corruption of mid-1980s Miami, and is inspired by the pilot episode and first season of the landmark television series.The screenplay is by Dan Gilroy, based on earlier drafts by Eric Warren Singer, with original series co-creators Anthony Yerkovich and Michael Mann serving as executive producers.Jordan arrives at the project fresh off his Academy Award win for best actor for Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners.”He will next direct, star in, and produce a reimagining of “The Thomas Crown Affair” for Amazon MGM Studios.Butler, who received a best actor Oscar nomination for his turn as Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis”, has since appeared in Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune: Part Two”, Jeff Nichols’ “The Bikeriders” and Darren Aronofsky’s “Caught Stealing”.He will next star in the A24 crime thriller “Enemies” alongside Jeremy Allen White.
