Blackburn Rovers legend Tony Parkes dies at 76, tributes pour in for the veteran coach (via Getty)
Tony Parkes, fondly known as “Mr Blackburn Rovers”, has unfortunately passed away at the age of 76. The former midfielder and coach dedicated over three decades of his life to Blackburn Rovers, becoming one of the most respected figures in the club’s history.
His journey began in 1970 when he joined from Buxton for £5,000. He continued until 2004, leaving behind a lasting legacy.The club confirmed the sad news and expressed deep sorrow over his passing. Parkes, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2020, died on Wednesday, as shared by his daughter Natalie. Known for his loyalty and hard work, he played a key role both on and off the field.

Tony Parkes spent 34 years at Blackburn Rovers. He worked with them closely as a player, coach, and caretaker manager.
He had over 400 appearances as a midfielder and scored 46 goals before retiring in 1982. Soon after, he joined the coaching staff and worked under several managers. This includes Kenny Dalglish during the club’s famous Premier League-winning season in 1994-95.
During his playing days, Parkes was known as a hardworking and determined midfielder. He used to carry the ball forward and also score important goals when needed.
His style of play made him a key part of the team during the 1970s, including their Third Division title win in 1974-75.He also served six spells as caretaker manager. One of his most important roles came in the 1996-97 season after Ray Harford left the club. At that point, Blackburn were sitting at the bottom of the table and facing serious trouble. Parkes took charge and helped the team avoid relegation.Blackburn praised him as a club great whose impact will always be remembered.
They noted that he was respected for his dedication, modest nature, and passion for the team, while also offering sincere sympathy to his daughter Natalie and loved ones during this sad period.After leaving Blackburn in 2004, Parkes worked as a scout for Leicester City and later joined Blackpool as an assistant manager under Simon Grayson. He even had a short spell as caretaker manager there before ending his coaching career.Tributes have poured in from across the football world. Former striker Alan Shearer remembered Parkes as a wonderful person and expressed his sadness at the news. Blackburn Rovers will honor Parkes with a special tribute at their final home game of the season against Leicester on May 2, celebrating the life of a man who gave everything to the club.
