Is Karl-Anthony Towns playing tonight? (Image via Getty Images)
The New York Knicks cruised past the Chicago Bulls 136–96 in their last outing. However, Karl-Anthony Towns sat out due to a right elbow issue. Even with the comfortable win, his fitness remains key to the Knicks’ chances in the playoffs.
According to Karl-Anthony Towns, the Knicks’ loss during Game 2 against the Atlanta Hawks team is related to the fact that he was not able to let fly due to only two attempts in the fourth quarter. Luckily for the Knicks, Towns appears geared up for a return. On Sunday, he practiced ahead of Monday’s match against Atlanta Hawks at State Farm Arena and got removed from the injured list, showing that he can step into action.
Karl-Anthony Towns’ injury update and role concerns loom large for New York Knicks ahead of playoff push
Karl-Anthony Towns has not been used efficiently in his second year at the Knicks, considering that he scored only 13.8 shots in the regular season – his all-time lowest, as well as scoring 20.1 points in a game on an average.Coaches and front offices throughout the league have been baffled by Brown and his staff’s strategy for making the most of their All-Star center throughout the season; this issue will become more pressing as the playoffs go on.
Regardless of how far New York advances, the questions regarding Towns’ fit and future will also persist ahead of what could be a significant offseason for several contenders. A source close to Towns told ESPN:“He so badly wants things to work here… He wants to be a Knick for life.” In general, KAT depends on other people to create looks for him. This season, assists accounted for about 58% of his twos, and a helping hand was the catalyst for nearly 95% of his triples.
This is not new information. It is consistent with Towns’ entire career. New York is aware of the player it acquired: a transcendent, floor-spacing seven-footer who isn’t positioned or hardwired to dominate games on his own initiative.
The Knicks’ late-game strategy in Game 2 hindered KAT’s success. Yes, he could have fought more for position in the post during one or two possessions. Nonetheless, it seemed that New York was not making much ado about this. The two-on-two matchup involving Towns and Jalen Brunson, which had recently gained some visibility, got pushed to the side the instant he reentered the fray with just under eight minutes left on the clock. The latter was in score-first, score-second, and score-third mode when KAT screened for JB. Towns were not the main focus. The management said:“Knicks have a clean injury report. Karl-Anthony Towns, after missing Friday’s game with a right elbow impingement, is not listed. So unless something changes, he should be good to go against the Hawks tomorrow.”The Knicks have achieved their victories because of Towns’ impact on both inside and outside areas, and he will be very important if the Knicks are to maintain their form over the final four regular season games.
