Sperm whales may be ‘speaking’ human-like language, new research reveals stunning ocean mystery

PC: National Marine Aquarium

Sperm whales have always fascinated researchers for their diving prowess and the complicated nature of their vocalisations. However, it seems the latest research on sperm whales has opened up new avenues of knowledge about these marine mammals.

According to a new study, sperm whales might use language structures comparable to human language when communicating with each other. This conclusion is based on several years of observation of sperm whales’ coda sounds. These sounds made by the creatures seem to follow a more organised pattern than what was originally assumed. The sperm whale is the largest toothed animal on Earth, featuring the biggest brain of any mammal.

It is able to move at a speed of up to 23 miles per hour and dive into depths of over 3,000 feet to hunt its prey.Their communication network adds yet another element to the intricacy of the species. As reported by the BBC, these latest discoveries indicate that there are still many unknowns regarding these animals’ lives and interactions in the vast ocean. Scientists continue to investigate, slowly assembling a more comprehensive image of a communication network that probably evolved millions of years ago in the depths of the ocean.

Sperm whale codas show vowel-like sound variations that may resemble human speech

Sperm whales communicate using rapid bursts of sound referred to as codas. These codas consist of quick clicks that follow each other in repetitive patterns. Scientists have taken decades to study these patterns under the water in an attempt to understand their composition.According to the most recent study conducted on these clicks, they could carry more information than people previously thought possible. For instance, these clicks could contain different variations that resemble vowels in the human language.

The variation depends on how the clicks are sequenced and the rhythm at which they occur. Project CETI scientists have been conducting extensive research in this field for some time now.The head of the project, David Gruber, says that there is great flexibility in the codas’ composition. He believes that the rhythm and spacing between the clicks form an evolving communication pattern.

Sperm whales social behaviour and how they maintain strong family bonds underwater

Sperm whales are highly social animals and tend to live in groups, often made up of family units.

They spend much of their lives in deep ocean waters but regularly come to the surface to breathe. It is during these surface intervals that most vocal activity is recorded. The whales appear to exchange codas in these moments, possibly sharing information or maintaining group bonds. They can hold their breath for up to 90 minutes and dive to extreme depths in search of squid, their main food source. Despite this solitary hunting behaviour, their group structure remains strong, especially among females and younger whales who stay together for long periods.

Sperm whale’s communication patterns

The study suggests that the way sperm whales organise their clicks may share structural similarities with human language. Scientists point to the presence of repeating patterns and variations that resemble how humans build words from sounds. This does not mean whales are speaking in language as humans do. Instead, it shows that their communication system may be more layered than simple signals. Experts involved in the research say these patterns could represent a form of structured communication that has evolved over millions of years. The comparison is still under investigation, and researchers are cautious about drawing direct parallels. Even so, the complexity is notable in itself.
