Common mistakes that attract snakes to your home

Finding snakes on your property can be unsettling. While they are fascinating creatures, keeping them out of your living spaces is the biggest challenge during these months. You need to know what draws them in to keep them away.

Snakes aren’t really interested in humans, but certain things you do can make your home more inviting to them. Here are some common everyday mistakes that may be attracting snakes to your home. Avoiding them can help protect you from potential snakebites.

Leaving out pet food and water

After feeding pets, most people leave food bowls and water outside. This is one of the biggest attractions for snakes. When you leave pet food outside, you’re essentially setting up a buffet for rodents, which snakes feed on.

Snakes will follow their prey to your yard and home. So always ensure you bring leftover pet food and water bowls inside after feeding time. Also, store dry pet food in sealed containers.

Ignoring rodent problems

Snakes feed on rats and mice. So, if your property has a rodent infestation, expect snakes as well. Many people ignore rodent issues, but this creates the perfect hunting ground for snakes. Instead, adopt measures to remove rodents.

Along with that, eliminate food sources. It’s best to seek the help of pest control, as they can eliminate the rodent problem scientifically and altogether.

Leaving wood piles

Snakes roam around your yard in search of shelter. So, if your place is full of ideal hiding spots, it may invite them. Think about wood piles, tall grass, or rock piles — all these can provide perfect cover. Ensure you keep your lawn trimmed, remove dead vegetation, and stack wood away from the yard.

Store it at least six inches off the ground.

Overwatering lawns and pots

Standing water attracts insects and small animals — the perfect dinner for snakes. So keeping your environment damp is like inviting snakes to a buffet. Avoid overwatering lawns, pots, and garden beds. This can attract frogs, insects, and rodents that snakes follow. Ensure your gutters are clean and well maintained, and fix any leaky faucets. These measures can help keep snakes out of your compound.

Ignoring gaps and cracks

Snakes are incredibly flexible. They can squeeze through small openings. The gaps under doors, around screens, and in roof or wall openings can let snakes inside. Fix these gaps and cracks to prevent common entry points. Inspect your home’s exterior regularly and seal any openings. Pay extra attention to areas where utilities enter your home.Avoiding these common mistakes can keep snakes at bay.
