The NFL Draft 2026 in Kansas City faced an unexpected pause on Thursday night when a tornado warning moved across the area. The Kansas City Chiefs were in the middle of their draft operations when weather alerts forced an immediate change in plans.

Andy Reid and his staff left the draft room and shifted into a safer interior space inside the same facility. The situation came right when the Chiefs were preparing key draft decisions. Instead of focusing on picks, the front office followed safety instructions and moved into the designated shelter area. The draft room itself sits in the center of the building and also serves as a safe zone. Even during the disruption, the team stayed inside, tracked updates on screens, and continued communication while the storm passed outside.

Andy Reid confirms draft room doubles as shelter as Chiefs adjust during tornado warning in Kansas City

The situation unfolded when severe weather alerts triggered a controlled safety response inside the Kansas City Chiefs facility. Staff members quickly moved away from open areas after security issued the warning. Andy Reid and the entire front office relocated to the interior draft room, which also functions as a shelter space within the building.Reid explained the setup during his post-round media availability on the same night.

“The draft room is in the middle of the building. It’s actually one of the shelter spots, so we all just went in there,” he told reporters. His comment made it clear the move was part of an established safety plan, not a panic reaction.

General manager Brett Veach also spoke about the moment during his media interaction at the NFL Draft 2026 coverage in Kansas City. He said security personnel informed him of the tornado warning, which forced everyone to relocate immediately.

Veach added that the team followed all safety protocols. He noted that while it disrupted his routine, the building’s structure and planning helped the group stay calm and organized.“I don’t like staying in the draft room. I like going into my office. He came in and said there’s a tornado warning, and we all have to go into the draft room… we followed all the safety protocols for sure,” Veach said.Despite the interruption, the Kansas City Chiefs continued their draft process from inside the shelter area.

The front office remained active, reviewed options, and stayed engaged as the storm passed. At the end of the night, conditions stabilized and the draft resumed normally in Kansas City. The situation stood out not because of chaos, but because the Chiefs managed a weather disruption without breaking focus during one of the biggest nights of the NFL calendar
