Amid much hype and social media buzz, ‘Varanasi’ filmmaker SS Rajamouli and producer SS Karthikeya made their highly anticipated appearances at CCXP Mexico 2026.
SS Rajamouli reveals Baahubali link to Mexico
Rajamouli, through a video message, greeted his fans and the Mexican audience at the event, where he not only spoke about his upcoming time-travel film, but also touched upon his blockbusters like ‘Baahubali’ and ‘RRR’.
In his video message that was shared online, the director confessed that elements in his film ‘Baahubali’ was inspired by the ancient Mayan civilisation. He said, “In my previous film #Baahubali, the city center and the throne were inspired by the famous Chichen Itza pyramid.” He went on to add, “But I must confess that my knowledge of Mexican history, heritage and culture is very minimal. But now, I hope this will help me learn more and more you wonderful people.”
SS Rajamouli on ‘RRR’ global impact
The director also reflected on the global impact of his films, particularly RRR, which found widespread international acclaim. Speaking about his journey, he said, “I have spent around 25 years making films, but nothing prepares you for when you realise that your story has crossed oceans. That people, thousands of miles away, are laughing, crying, and dancing to something you created. That is what RRR did for me. Not just my country India, but the whole world showed me that a universal emotion is enough to reach every corner.
When I heard ‘Naatu Naatu’ sung and danced to across the world, I thought, ‘Yes! This is the exact reason why I make films.’”
Producer SS Karthikeya addresses audience
During an interaction at the event, producer SS Karthikeya was asked whether the film ‘Varanasi’, could resonate strongly with audiences in Mexico and Latin America due to shared cultural themes of ancestor worship. Responding to the question, Karthikeya highlighted parallels saying, “That’s the hope.
There are some similarities. A lot of films, comics and series coming out from Mexico have drawn from their history of the Aztec or Mayan civilisation, and so do we in India.
“As per reports, team ‘Varanasi’ will share a special BTS video with fans at the event.
‘Varanasi’ production update
Meanwhile, in the latest update from the sets, the film’s lead stars, Mahesh Babu and Priyanka Chopra, reportedly wrapped up filming a song sequence. Rumours are rife that the cast will soon head over to Antarctica to shoot the next leg of the schedule, while other reports allege that the team will be shooting some important underwater scenes at an Indian studio.
