Elon Musk’s X launches XChat, a WhatsApp rival on iOS

Elon Musk’s social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) has launched its WhatsApp rival, standalone messaging app — XChat for iPhone users. The app is designed to offer users a dedicated space for private messaging, file sharing and audio and video calls with the X contacts.

The app offer multiple useful features such as disappearing messages, message editing and screenshot blocking. With this new app, X aims to offer a privacy-focused alternative to users.“Chat with anyone on X in a private, focused space built for conversation. No ads. No tracking. Fully end-to-end encrypted. Sign in with your X account and everyone is already there. Friends, family, creators, colleagues. Skip the invites, the phone number swaps, the “are you on this app?” conversations.

The network you spent years building works instantly. Privacy is the foundation. Every message is end-to-end encrypted with a key pair unique to you, protected by a PIN that never leaves your device.

No one can read your conversations. Not even X,” reads the app description on App Store. The launch of XChat signals a shift in X’s broader strategy. Owner Elon Musk had previously envisioned X as an all-in-one “everything app” combining messaging, payments, shopping, creator tools, and AI.

Instead, the company is now unbundling services into specialized apps, with XChat serving as the messaging hub. Payments are being tested separately but have not yet been rolled out to the public.

XChat app: Key features

XChat introduces several tools aimed at enhancing communication and privacy:* Messaging & Calls: Private and group chats, audio and video calls.* Privacy Controls: End-to-end encryption, PIN protection, disappearing messages, and screenshot blocking.* Message Management: Options to edit and delete messages for all participants.* No Ads or Tracking: X claims the app is free from advertising and tracking mechanisms.* Communities Integration: XChat will replace the Communities feature, which is being discontinued due to low usage and spam. The app was tested with a small group of beta users earlier in 2026, and feedback helped shape the launch version. According to X’s lead designer Benji Taylor, XChat is “just the beginning of what we’re building for messaging,” hinting at future updates and expanded features.
