Patna: Residents of Jai Prakash Nagar are facing severe inconvenience and health risks as the Rajiv Nagar drain continues to overflow, spilling dirty water onto roads. The foul stench from stagnant water has spread across the locality, making movement difficult.
Schoolchildren are struggling to commute while motorcyclists are navigating cautiously through water-filled potholes.The situation worsened after a portion of the road adjoining the drain caved in on Tuesday evening, causing a JCB to fall into it. Though no injuries were reported, the damaged drain and absence of safety barriers have raised safety concerns.Locals said the overflowing drain has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes and water-borne diseases.
With the monsoon approaching, they fear contaminated water could enter their homes if the situation is not addressed quickly.Bihar Urban Infrastructure Development Corporation (Buidco) has deployed a de-watering vehicle and a team to remove water from the roads. Sweta Bhaskar, public relations officer of the corporation, said redevelopment of the drain is underway, with work largely carried out at night to minimise traffic disruption.
“On Tuesday, a JCB vehicle fell into the drain due to dilapidated condition of the drain and the attached road.
Due to this, drain water has flooded the adjacent road. A dewatering machine has been deployed to remove accumulated water from the roads and minimise inconvenience to residents,” she said.Officials said the disruption caused by the incident would be resolved soon and the project remains on track.Residents, however, urged authorities to speed up repairs. A resident said, “It is so risky to drive through the road, especially during night. The drain water has made the road slippery.”
