The annual White House Correspondents’ Association dinner at the Washington Hilton was suddenly interrupted on Saturday when a security breach and follow up gunfire caused an urgent emergency response during the conference.As the sound of shots echoed near the ballroom, attendees, including President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and other high-ranking officials, were quickly shielded by Secret Service agents and evacuated from the premises.On a night of the celebration of press freedom and national discourse, the interrupted event caused an immediate evacuation of the country’s top leadership.

The suspect, identified by law enforcement as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen, is a resident of Torrance, California.

According to Reuters, Allen appears to be a graduate of the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), having worked as a part-time teacher and a game developer. His academic and professional background is extensive; his LinkedIn profile describes him as a “mechanical engineer and computer scientist by degree, independent game developer by experience, teacher by birth”.

Later he also secured a master’s degree in computer science from California State University at Dominguez Hills in 2025.

During his time at Caltech, he was reportedly active in various campus organizations, including a robotics club and the school’s Christian fellowship.He previously worked as a mechanical engineer at IJK Controls and as a teaching assistant at his alma mater. Furthermore, a Facebook post cited by Reuters noted that he was recognised as “Teacher of the Month” in December 2024 by the Torrance office of C2 Education, a private tutoring service.

What exactly happened at the conference

The shooting occurred at the Washington Hilton hotel, where the annual dinner was being held in the presence of President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and Vice President JD Vance.According to the Secret Service, the suspect held a shotgun and opened fire on an agent after breaching a security checkpoint near to the ballroom. Law enforcement officials stated that Allen was believed to be a guest at the hotel, though no definitive motive for the attack has been established as of now.As the investigation unfolds, reports have indicated that Allen believed it was his “duty to target Trump administration officials,” a claim reportedly found in a note sent to family members just before the incident. While he is registered to vote with no party preference, The Los Angeles Times reported that he made a single $25 political donation to ActBlue, earmarked for Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign, in October 2024.
