A debut that did not deliver
Mamta Mohandas stepped into films with high expectations. She made her debut as a lead in ‘Mayookham’ (2005), directed by veteran filmmaker T. Hariharan. The film marked his return after a long break and featured newcomers in key roles.Despite the anticipation, the film failed commercially. Critics noticed her effort, but it did not translate into widespread praise. Soon after, she appeared in smaller roles and shared screen space with major stars.

Finding recognition in acting and music
Gradually, Mamta expanded her portfolio. A turning point came with ‘Big B’ (2007), starring Mammootty, which brought her into the spotlight. Her breakthrough as a playback singer came with the hit track “Daddy Mummy” from ‘Villu’ (2009).

Battling cancer twice
Mamta’s personal battles proved far more intense than her professional setbacks. In 2009, she was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma. She underwent treatment and returned to work after being declared cancer-free.However, the cancer resurfaced in 2013 after a failed bone marrow transplant. She sought further treatment in Los Angeles and once again overcame the disease.In 2023, she revealed another health challenge. Sharing her vitiligo diagnosis on Instagram, she wrote, “Dear sun, I embrace you now like I have never before.
So spotted, I’m losing colour. I rise even before you every morning, to see you glimmer your first ray through the haze. Give me all you’ve got, for I will be indebted, here on out and forever by your grace.” Her resilience inspired many.
Marriage and separation
Mamta married her childhood friend, Pregith Padmanabhan, in 2011. However, the marriage ended within a year. The couple separated and later divorced. She navigated this personal upheaval while continuing her medical treatment and professional commitments.
Controversy and public backlash
Beyond her health struggles, Mamta also faced criticism for her remarks on sexual assault cases. She once stated, “I don’t know if I should be saying this, but if a woman gets into trouble, I feel somewhere she is responsible for it. Because if I have gotten into any sort of trouble where I have felt that someone has spoken to me with disrespect or in this situation, a sexual assault or a sexual abuse or anything indicative towards that manner, I feel I would have entertained some part of it.
