Mondo Duplantis did something big away from the pole vault runway. The Olympic gold medal winner quietly married his long-time girlfriend Desirée Inglander in Sweden. The couple kept it very private and did not make a big public announcement at first.
Later, Duplantis confirmed the news in an interview with Swedish outlet TT. Even more surprising, he said he is okay missing competitions for his wedding plans. For him, this moment matters more than another event on the calendar. The couple is already legally married, but they are still planning a larger wedding celebration in France this summer.Mondo Duplantis confirms secret marriage with Desirée Inglander and explains why he is skipping competitions for wedding plansMondo Duplantis and Desirée Inglander officially got married at Stockholm City Hall.
It was a small and simple step, mainly needed because Swedish rules require couples to register their marriage before holding a ceremony abroad. The bigger celebration will happen later this year in Cannes, France.Duplantis spoke openly about it and made his priorities very clear. He said, “It is what it is. It’s a wedding and it happens once in a lifetime. If you miss one or two competitions – who cares?” He also added, “If I have to miss a competition because of a wedding and marry the love of my life, it doesn’t matter.”
Because of the wedding, he will not compete at the Bislett Games in Norway in June. He was a bit surprised that the event organizer revealed his absence before he did. “I might have wished he wouldn’t say anything. I was a little shocked that he said it, but that’s how it is,” Duplantis said.Even though they are already married on paper, Duplantis says it still feels incomplete. “I feel half-married. But I don’t have the ring on.
Not until the real ceremony in June,” he explained. He also shared that they are trying to keep things private. “It feels a little strange. I’m grateful for it, there’s a lot of love. But we’re trying to find a balance to keep it a little private.”Their love story has been very visible over the years. Desirée Inglander has often been seen cheering for him during competitions. One of their most talked-about moments came during the Paris Olympics when they hugged after Duplantis won gold and broke the world record. The proposal itself was also carefully planned. Duplantis told her they were going for a Vogue-style photoshoot in the Hamptons. As the sun was setting, he surprised her by getting down on one knee. He later said, “I was more nervous than at the Olympics.” Inglander admitted, “I’m still shocked. I’m such a control freak, it’s impossible to surprise me.”
