Grand Theft Auto 6 looms as the ultimate blockbuster, with fans waiting with bated breath, trailer views in the billions, and pre-orders stacking up. Yet, Rockstar’s nightmare persists – leaks that spoil surprises before day one. From hacked footage to stolen trailers, past scandals have left an indelible mark on franchises, eroding trust and launch magic. And it is the physical copies that often fuel this fire, landing in eager hands weeks early via loose retailers. In order to prevent this, Rockstar Games might just refrain from selling out physical copies, claims words from insiders.

GTA 6 might just refrain from physical copies in the early days!
A Polish site, PPE.pl, reports that Grand Theft Auto 6 might skip physical copies at launch to dodge leaks.
Their insider Graczdari, who nailed past scoops like Oblivion Remastered dates and Switch 2 ports, claims Take-Two has no day-one disc plans . “We’re hearing more and more that the physical version won’t be released simultaneously with the digital version to prevent leaks,” the source notes.Digital versions will hit consoles first on November 19, 2026, post-delays from Fall 2025 and May 26, with discs possibly weeks or months later, even early 2027.
Leak history yields caution
GTA 6’s history of leaks explains Rockstar’s caution. In September 2022, over an hour of gameplay footage hit the internet, offering an early peek at the sequel to one of gaming’s biggest hits. The first trailer leaked a day early in December 2023 via a blurry, watermarked clip on X. Even the 2021 Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy, Definitive Edition had pre-release footage spill online. Early retail copies often lead to streams, so a digital-only launch helps limit that risk.
Fan and Industry Reactions
Digital-only might disappoint collectors craving shelf collections, but leak-haters support this move for security reasons. Reddit threads buzz, some even call for receipt codes unlocking digital access till discs arrive, delaying streams two months.
