Kamal Haasan, a six-decade veteran, continues to redefine Indian cinema with daring innovations in technical and narrative filmmaking. From silent films like ‘Pushpaka Vimana’ to the multi-perspective ‘Virumaandi’ and the technically astounding ‘Dasavathaaram’, Haasan consistently pushes boundaries. His personal experiences even shaped the emotional depth of ‘Mahanadi’.
‘Ulaganayagan’ Kamal Haasan remains one of Indian cinema’s most daring innovators. His career span over six decades and he has consistently challenged conventional filmmaking rules and has also inspired several new filmmakers.Kamal’s contribution lies not just in performances but also in pushing technical and narrative limits creatively.
Breaking norms with unique films
One of his earliest experiments came with the silent film ‘Pushpaka Vimana’. Directed by Singeetam Srinivasa Rao, the film had no dialogues. It relied entirely on visual storytelling and expressive acting and one important aspect of the film is how perfectly the director and the actors create a make-belief that the situations doesn’t demand dialogues.
Kamal played an unemployed youth caught in a satirical narrative.Another major milestone was ‘Hey Ram’ which also had Shah Rukh Khan in a major role. The film revolved around India’s Partition and Gandhi’s assassination which used a non-linear structure. Films like ‘Virumaandi’ also showcased his innovation where the narrative used multiple perspectives, inspired by ‘Rashomon’-style storytelling which can be later seen in Christopher Nolan films.
Technical brilliance
Kamal Haasan has often pushed the limits of technology in Indian cinema. The epic film ‘Dasavathaaram’ remains a main example. In the film, he portrayed ten distinct characters and it is something extraordinary for sure.Other films like ‘Aalavandhan’ and ‘Anbe Sivam’ explored psychological and philosophical themes. His earlier works, including Aval Appadithaan and Raja Paarvai, also showed his experimental mindset.
Personal experience behind ‘Mahanadi ‘
One of his most emotionally driven works is ‘Mahanadi’ which tells the story of a father searching for his abducted daughter.Interestingly, the script was inspired by a real-life incident from Kamal’s own life. He once revealed a shocking experience involving his household staff, “My household help, all of them, conspired to kidnap my daughter for ransom. They even did a dry run. By accident I discovered their plan.
I was angry, unnerved and ready to kill for my baby’s safety.”He further added, “Later, when I sat down to write, the script wrote itself. Maybe assisted by my fear, apprehension and paranoia.”
Shruti Haasan on avoiding experiments
Kamal Haasan’s experimental legacy has not directly influenced his daughter Shruti Haasan’s career choices.Shruti once explained why she chose a different path. As reported by 123 Telugu, she revealed that she wanted to build her identity independently.“I never got movie offers using my father’s name because no matter how much fame I will earn, I won’t be satisfied if I don’t make it on my own. Since the beginning, I have been conscious about my father’s image not influencing my career. That’s the reason why I did not experiment much like him,” she said.On the other hand, Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth will be next teaming up for ‘KH x RK’ directed by Nelson Dilipkumar.
