Lindsey Vonn is still dealing with the pain of her scary Winter Olympics crash, but one unexpected message gave her real strength. The American skiing star shared that Prince William personally wrote to her after her serious fall at the Milano Cortina Games.

The crash left her with a broken ankle and major damage in her left leg, forcing her into multiple surgeries and a long recovery. The accident happened early in her downhill run, and it quickly turned into a nightmare. Vonn had to stay in an Italian hospital for weeks before finally returning home to Park City, Utah on March 1. Speaking to Vanity Fair, Lindsey Vonn shared what Prince William wrote to her. He said, “The way you wrote about stepping into the starting gate with courage and no regrets says so much about your resilience.” For Vonn, it was a special moment, but she also mentioned another message that meant even more to her.Veteran journalist Diane Sawyer sent her a simple line. She wrote, “You can’t have courage and comfort at the same time.”

Vonn said this message stayed in her mind during her toughest days. Her recovery journey has not been easy. She explained how the pain in the hospital felt constant and overwhelming. During a scan, she said, “Halfway through, I started sweating. I was just in such extreme pain. I screamed at the top of my lungs: Get me out. It just wouldn’t let up. It’s seared into my brain.”Doctors had to act quickly when complications developed in her leg.

Team USA doctor Tom Hackett performed an emergency procedure to save her leg. He later explained the seriousness of the situation, saying there was a real risk she could lose function in her leg if treatment was delayed.Vonn also spoke about the mental struggle during her hospital stay in Treviso. The constant pain, strong medication, and sleepless nights made things worse. She said, “It took everything I had for it to not drive me insane.”Even now, her future in skiing is unclear. She is back in training slowly, with daily therapy and gym work. But she admitted, “It’s hard to tell with this injury. I really feel like that was a horrible last run to end my career on.” Still, she has not fully closed the door on a comeback. For now, her focus remains on healing and taking one step at a time.
