Girl dies by suicide after being scolded for excessive use of phone in Gopalganj

Patna: A 16-year-old girl allegedly died by suicide at Kahla Ahirtoli village under Barauli police station area in Gopalganj district on Saturday morning, following an argument at home over excessive use of a mobile phone.The deceased was identified as Jyoti Kumari, daughter of Sunil Yadav. Family members said she was frequently counselled to limit her screen time and focus on her studies. On Saturday morning, her mother chided her again over the issue, after which the girl went inside her room and locked the door.When repeated calls went unanswered, family members broke open the door and found her unresponsive, and they informed the police immediately.

A police team reached the spot, took the body into custody and sent it for post-mortem. The Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team also visited the spot and collected evidence.Station souse officer (SHO) Kumari Alka said that prima facie the matter appears to be a case of suicide. “An investigation has been initiated to ascertain the exact circumstances leading to the incident,” she said, adding that no additional details have emerged so far beyond the family’s account.

Jyoti’s uncle, Ram Barhai Chaudhary, said the family was concerned about her prolonged cellphone use and that she had been reprimanded multiple times over the issue.Police said further action will be taken based on post-mortem and investigation findings.
