Dayton Webber, a former player in the American Cornhole League, is now at the center of a serious legal case in Maryland. The 27-year-old, known for competing as a quadruple amputee athlete, has been denied bond as he waits for trial in a murder case.
The decision came during his first court appearance in Charles County District Court on Wednesday, where he joined through a video call from jail after being brought back from Virginia earlier this week. Police say the case goes back to March 22, when Webber was in a car with Brad Wells and two other people in La Plata, Maryland. During the drive, something went very wrong. Investigators believe Webber shot and killed Brad Wells, who was also 27.
The two passengers later told police they got out of the car and called 911. Brad Wells was later found in a yard in Charlotte Hall, Maryland, where he was declared dead at the scene.
Dayton Webber faces murder charges after Brad Wells death as court denies bond in Maryland case
In court, prosecutors shared key details that may shape the case going forward. They said a gun found inside Dayton Webber’s car matches the weapon believed to have been used in the shooting. Police in Virginia also got permission to check video footage from cameras attached to the outside of the car, according to court records.
At the same time, Dayton Webber’s lawyer gave a very different version of events. The defense says Webber acted in self defense and was scared of Brad Wells before the shooting happened. The two passengers told police that the men were arguing just moments before the incident. According to their statements, the argument involved issues connected to drugs, guns, and a woman. The court, however, decided not to grant bond at this stage, meaning Webber will stay in custody while the case continues to move forward.
Tori Mattingly speaks out on Dayton Webber as past relationship and claims add new layer to case
As the case gains attention, new voices are also coming forward. Tori Mattingly, who is Dayton Webber’s former girlfriend, spoke publicly about her past with him in an interview with TMZ. She said she had also been in a relationship with Brad Wells and described Webber as someone with an “angry dark side.”In a longer message shared on Facebook, Tori Mattingly pushed back against people who were defending Webber. She wrote, “Watching people say ‘this doesn’t sound like him’ or ‘he would never do that’ is honestly sickening.
You didn’t live with him. I did.”She continued, “For four years, I saw the side of him that nobody else wanted to believe existed. The anger. The control. The abuse. The kind of darkness you don’t just ‘mistake.’”Her comments have added more attention to the case, especially as people learn more about Dayton Webber’s past.Webber had earlier shared his life story with ESPN in 2023. He lost parts of all four limbs as a baby after a serious blood infection led to sepsis. Despite that, he learned how to play cornhole from a young age and found a way to compete by holding the bag between his upper arms. His journey into professional sport had once inspired many. Now, the focus has shifted completely to the courtroom, where the case is still developing.
