More than 200 child advocacy groups and experts have written to Google CEO Sundar Pichai and YouTube CEO Neal Mohan, urging them to ban AI-generated videos from YouTube’s children’s platform.
The demand comes amid growing concerns over the impact of such content on young viewers. The letter, organised by advocacy group Fairplay, claims that these videos are low quality and designed to capture attention, while also generating significant revenue. The signatories include major organisations and researchers, who say stronger action is needed to protect children online.
Groups raise concerns over AI content
In the letter, the groups said AI-generated videos are harming children’s development and should not be allowed on platforms designed for young audiences.
They argued that such content can create confusion and affect how children understand the world.Rachel Franz of Fairplay said, “AI-generated videos are really just an escalation of a myriad of problems that YouTube already has when it comes to interfacing with kids on their platforms.” She added, “It’s important to address this AI slop phenomenon… and take YouTube to task for the way that its platform is designed.”
What is AI slop
The term “AI slop” refers to mass-produced videos created using artificial intelligence, often featuring repetitive or unclear content aimed at holding viewers’ attention. The groups have asked YouTube to ban AI-generated content from YouTube Kids and limit its reach across the main platform. They also want clearer labels for AI content and controls for parents.According to the letter, some AI-focused channels targeting children are earning millions of dollars, raising concerns about financial incentives behind such content.
YouTube responds to concerns
A YouTube spokesperson said the platform has “high standards” for content on YouTube Kids and limits AI-generated material to selected channels. The company also said it is working on better labeling of AI content. The issue comes as regulators and experts continue to examine the impact of artificial intelligence on online platforms used by children.
