Tragedy at Hatnia pond: Man drowns while performing funeral rituals; NDRF recovers body after two and a half hours

Ranchi: A 40-year-old man drowned in Hatnia pond in the city on Friday morning. The deceased was identified as Rakesh Kumar, a resident of Chatakpur area.Kotwali police station officer in-charge Sanoj Kumar Choudhary said that the victim had gone to the pond to perform funeral rituals of a relative.

As he started swimming, he didn’t realise he had gone into the deep waters and drowned, he added.After receiving information, a police team visited the spot and also called in a National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team, which reached at 1:30 pm. An NDRF diver went inside the pond and recovered the body, police said, adding that the operation lasted for about two and a half hours.
