Bullets found in passenger’s handbag at Patna airport

A passenger, Syed Mohsin Ali, was briefly detained at Patna Airport after live cartridges were found in his bag. He was traveling to Delhi for his brother’s medical treatment. Despite the discovery, Ali was later allowed to proceed after signing a bond, with authorities citing the medical emergency.

Patna: Security personnel at Jayprakash Narayan International Airport detained a passenger on Friday morning after three live cartridges were found in his handbag during a routine pre-boarding screening.The passenger was identified as Syed Mohsin Ali, a resident of Phulwarisharif. Ali was scheduled to fly from Patna to Delhi on an Air India flight.Following the recovery of cartridges during scanning of his handbag by the CISF personnel, he was taken into custody and handed over to the Airport police station for interrogation.Sunil Kumar Jaiswal, SHO, Airport police station, said Ali told investigators that his family was travelling to Delhi for his brother’s treatment.

He claimed he was unaware of how the cartridges ended up in his handbag. An FIR has been lodged in this connection, the SHO added.While Ali’s brother, sister-in-law and a caretaker were permitted to continue their journey to Delhi. After questioning, Ali was later allowed to fly to Delhi after signing a legal bond by him.Patna SSP, Kartikeya K Sharma, said the accused was a former member of the Bihar State Sunni Waqf Board.

Ali produced medical documents and was therefore allowed to go to Delhi on grounds of the medical emergency situation.Another senior police official said heightened security checks and advanced scanning systems at airports have led to an increase in detection of such prohibited items in recent years.Officials said carrying ammunition without valid documentation is a punishable offence under the Arms Act, even if carried inadvertently. Further legal action will depend on the findings of the ongoing investigation, she added.
