One feared drowned as boat capsizes in Sheohar

Tragedy struck as a boat carrying 25 women capsized in the Bagmati river near Sheohar, Bihar. While 24 were rescued, Gulshan Khatoon, 30, remains missing after being swept away by strong currents. The women were en route to their fields for wheat harvest. A search operation is underway.

Patna: A woman was feared drowned when a boat, carrying 25 women passengers, capsized in the Bagmati river near Mahadeva village under Tariyani police station area of Sheohar district on Friday.Local residents and authorities swiftly responded and managed to rescue 24 women, while one passenger, identified as Gulshan Khatoon (30), was missing. The women were going to their fields to harvest wheat when the boat overturned midstream. Eyewitnesses reported hearing screams as the women struggled to stay afloat. While some managed to swim to safety, others were rescued by locals.According to information, due to the absence of a bridge over the Bagmati river, people of the area travel by boat.

Residents of several villages, including Motanaje, Mahadeva, Jagdishpur Kothiyan and Sharifnagar under Tariyani block, have their farmlands across the river in Belsand area of Sheohar district.SDO Avinash Kunal said: “As soon as the information about the incident was received, instructions were issued to send NDRF and officials to the spot. Rescue operation was carried out. Due to the strong current, Gulshan was swept away in the water and she has not been traced yet. The search operation will be conducted on Saturday as well to trace her.”
