Gurgaon: A caretaker of a guest house on DLF Phase 3 has been accused of burning garbage under a Peepal tree, causing a fire that damaged the tree’s leaves.Amita Singh, an advocate, animal rights activist and former professor of law and governance at JNU, lodged a complaint at DLF 3 police station against him.Singh, who is also the president of Walk for Animals and Habitat (WAH), said the incident occurred around 8.30am near property U15/1. The accused allegedly set garbage on fire beneath an old peepal tree, causing flames to spread and burn its new foliage.She alleged that when asked to extinguish the fire, the man responded with abusive language and refused to comply.Highlighting the legal violations, Singh said burning garbage is prohibited under the Environment Protection Act, 1986, and the Air (prevention and control of pollution) Act, 1981, as well as orders issued by the National Green Tribunal. She also referred to directives by the MCG, which has banned garbage burning and imposed fines on violators.Speaking to TOI, Singh raised concerns about eateries dumping waste into sewer lines or on green belts. “Restaurants and dhabas are blatantly encroaching on green belts. There is no system in place to check this environmental damage,” she said.Based on her complaint, an FIR was filed under sections 280 (polluting air in a manner hazardous to public health) and 223(a) (disobedience to an order duly promulgated by a public servant) of the BNS.
