Rabindra Bhawan awaits grand opening; Artists frustrated by years of postponements

After years of waiting and anticipation, Ranchi’s Rabindra Bhawan, a magnificent cultural complex worth Rs 244 crore, is set to open its doors to the public. The delays were attributed to crucial interior enhancements and artistic revisions, ensuring the facility meets the highest standards.

Ranchi: Even after years of construction and a series of missed inauguration dates, the much-anticipated Rabindra Bhawan in Ranchi is still awaiting its official opening, though officials now claim it is fully ready. The Rs 244 crore cultural complex, envisioned as a landmark convention and cultural hub for Jharkhand, had faced repeated postponements, raising concerns over administrative delays. However, authorities say the final round of interior corrections, particularly related to sculptures and design elements has now been completed.“The delay was mainly due to certain interior refinements that were necessary to maintain the aesthetic and structural integrity of the project.

Some sculptures and artistic components required reworking, which took additional time,” said Sunil Kumar, secretary, urban development and housing department.“All such work has now been completed, and the building is ready in all respects. The inauguration will be conducted by chief minister Hemant Soren very soon,” he added.Developed by JUIDCO, Rabindra Bhawan houses a 1,500-seat state-of-the-art auditorium, art galleries, exhibition spaces, a library, banquet halls, VIP lounges and multiple-purpose halls spread across three floors, along with basement parking.

The project had earlier missed multiple inauguration targets, including November’s statehood Day opening, despite last-minute efforts to complete artistic and finishing work. “We have been waiting for years. Each new date raises hope, but the delays only frustrate us more,” said Deepak Sahu, a resident.
