Google Photos updates Pixel-exclusive AI editing feature: What it means for users

Google Photos is reportedly testing an update to one of its Pixel-exclusive AI editing tools. The company is reportedly changing how users interact with the AI-based image editing tools.

The update focuses on the AI Enhance feature, which currently generates multiple edited versions of a photo. Instead of expanding its capabilities, Google appears to be restructuring the feature into separate variants with fewer output choices. The move could influence how users edit photos on Pixel devices, particularly those who rely on automated tools for quick adjustments. The feature is still in testing and has not been rolled out widely.According to a report by Android Authority, Google Photos’ Pixel-exclusive AI Enhance tool which uses AI to automatically adjust elements such as composition, lighting, and colours currently generates three different versions of an edited image, allowing users to pick one based on their preference. However, that is going to change:

What’s changing in Google Photos app’s Pixel-exclusive AI Enhance feature

The update splits this feature into two versions: “AI Enhance I” and “AI Enhance II.”

While “AI Enhance II” continues to offer multiple output options, the newer “AI Enhance I” produces only a single edited image. This change could be aimed at reducing what is often referred to as “choice fatigue,” where users may find it difficult to select from several similar outputs. The report suggests that limiting the number of generated images may also reduce computational load on Google’s systems. However, early observations indicate that generating a single image does not significantly reduce processing time compared to producing three versions. The feature has been spotted in testing through an APK teardown of version 7.69.0.890655694 of the app. It is currently available to a small group of users and has not yet been released widely. Apart from the change in the number of outputs, there are no noticeable differences in how the edits are applied between the two versions. As with most features identified through teardowns, it remains unclear whether the update will be rolled out broadly. However, it’s important to note that Google has not officially confirmed the changes or provided details on its long-term plans for the AI Enhance feature.
